A smile curved across her face as she settled in to his chest and traced an idle fingertip along his palm, all while surveying the mountains silhouetted in the distance. The chill had not seeped through Shahrzad’s skin-it never did, thanks to the warmth of the magic in her veins-but she was not one to shy away from the chance to feel Khalid’s body against hers. Without a word, Khalid draped one of the fur-lined cloaks around them and held her close. Then, when an expanse of mountains-far higher and far more imposing than those in Khorasan-appeared on the horizon, the carpet began to rise. The carpet soared eastward for more than two hours. This time, she had not the slightest notion. True, she’d traveled faster than she’d ever believed possible-the ground had blurred beneath her, and the stars had stretched thin on either side-but she’d always had a vague sense of where she was going. “And I’d take care with whom you insult in this moment, little sister.” She drew another, smaller dagger from her sleeve.T HIS WAS THE FARTHEST SHAHRZAD HAD EVER FLOWN on the magic carpet.īefore, her journeys had taken no more than an hour. Shahrzad bent to retrieve one of the blades. When Yasmine nodded their way, the soldiers let their swords fall to the dirt. “Drop your weapons,” Shahrzad ordered the men. “Step any closer, and you will bathe in her blood.” Vikram’s eyes flashed obsidian. The soldiers dashed toward her, drawing their swords. She froze for an instant, then began to struggle. “For the last time, follow me, you ridiculous fools,” Yasmine repeated with a silvery peal of laughter.Īt that, Vikram slinked from the inky darkness behind Yasmine el-Sharif, putting his dagger to her throat in a silent threat. That nickname was reserved for Despina’s use. “For it’s not like you to be so circumspect.” “I was wondering when you would show your true face, Brat Calipha,” Yasmine said. “Like hell we will,” Shahrzad seethed back. “Come with me.” Yasmine directed again with her chin. Alas, all Shahrzad had was seething rage.Ī rage that kept her trembling and silent. Had she a weapon, she would not hesitate to use it. It would be the work of a moment for Shahrzad to knock her down. Shahrzad studied the beautiful girl standing a hairsbreadth from her. “You evil hag.” Despina’s whisper passed through smiling lips. “Remain calm, my lady,” Yasmine said softly. In response, Shahrzad took hold of Yasmine’s arm, her threat clear. ![]() Y ASMINE GESTURED TOWARD THE GROVE OF LEMON trees behind them, her hand firmly wrapped around Despina’s wrist. ![]()
